Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. The Spanish government is based here, as is the Spanish monarch.

Built on a plateau between mountains, the city’s average altitude is 655 metres above sea level making it the highest of all European capitals.

Madrid still retains much of its historic architecture and has many well known landmarks including the huge Royal Palace of Madrid, the Teatro Real with its restored 1850 Opera House, and the Prado Museum which holds one of the finest art collections in the world and is where Picasso’s Guernica hangs.

Madrid is well known for its vibrant nightlife, performing arts and bohemian café culture but the city is also full of green spaces and parkland. In 2005 a count of the trees in Madrid came to approximately 500,000 (only Tokyo has more). Even the railway station doubles as a garden with 4,000 square meters of tropical plants. The Parque del Retiro is Madrid’s largest park. On Sunday it seems the whole city turns out to take a stroll and a well earned break from hectic city life. Another popular weekend destination is El Rastrom, the vast flea market where you can pick up vintage clothes, furniture, textiles and any amount of interesting junk.
